Called the Legion BootStation, the eGPU enclosure can hold a graphics card up to 330mm in length. By developing this component and announcing it alongside the Legion Y740S, Lenovo is charting a course for Razer as a direct competitor. Razer already provides its own eGPU Core X enclosures for its Blade Stealth laptops. Lenovo claims its Legion BootStation has clear advantages over Razer’s offerings. Chief among them is price, with Lenovo’s product costing $249.99 compared to the Core X starting at $300. Other benefits of the BootStation include a USB hub (two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports and an Ethernet port). This hub is available on the base model, whereas Razer reserves its similar solution for the $400 Core X Chroma.
Y740S Laptop
In terms of the Legion Y740S laptop, it will start at $1099.99 for base configuration. Lenovo claims the machines is its “thinnest and lightest gaming laptop yet”. However, we are not particularly bowled over by this laptop, not least because it does not come with a dedicated graphics card (hence the BootStation). Let’s be clear, the price suggests a mid-range gaming laptop and that’s what you get, at best. For example, screen performance caps at 60Hz. That said, there is a 10th gen Intel Core i9 H-series CPU under the hood. So yeah, a mixed bag. Other specs include configuration options up to 32GB of RAM, up to a 1TB PCIe SSD, two USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports, an SD card reader, a headphone jack, and two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Finally, you will be able to choose between 1080p and 4K display versions. Both the Legion BootStation and Legion Y740S will be available from May.
